Get the whole story - guided tour to Trollpikken

The tale of Trollpikken  has begun a long, long time ago – before your grandfather was born, before the dinosaurs – yes, even before the first signs of any plants on our planet. Back then, deep down below an enormous mountain, the Trollpikken was born from warm and red-glowing molten rock. Slowly but surely the mountain on top was worn down by the relentless forces of nature, piece by piece.   Many years had passed, with summer heat and winter cold, with rain flushing across the mountain side and wind carrying away dust and stones. Until one day, Trollpikken emerged from the depths of the earth and out in the fresh breeze, only to get covered once again. This time by the icy crust of huge glaciers that covered the land, the last of their kind.   Book a tour with Magma geopark staff and hear the rest of the story!   Tour includes: -Transportation(both ways) from Tourist infomation Egersund. -Professional guide -Hot beverage and snack

Blåfjell historic mines

The Blåfjell mines is a popular attraction taking you back in time to an era of hard man labor and tough working conditions. Mining in Blåfjell lasted from 1869 to 1875 and up to 200 workers were engaged in the direct or indirect work related to the mines. There are 20 mines of different sizes where 8 of these are larger and have obviously been more important. The ore of interest is called ilmenite, a titanium oxide, and can still be seen inside the mines.    The hike is 7.2 km back and forth and takes you along a beautifully constructed railway earlier transporting ore from Blåfjell and down to the coast. Along the road the Rocking rock (Ruggesteinen) will be visited - a 74 ton large rock which is possible to move! The highlight for many is the visit inside one of the old mines with beautiful acoustics and mystical atmosphere.    Blåfjell is an scenic area with a interesting story and the hike is suitable for all ages.    Tour includes: -Professional guide -Hot beverage and snack

Activities in Lund

Magma Geopark Gursli historic mines

Gursli historic mines

Gursli historic mines, situated a few kilometers outside Moi, holds an interesting story about the mining activity in the area. The hike to the mines takes you along the old and winding miners road used for transport of the ore and is about 4 km back and forth. The hike starts at an altitude of about 160 meters above sea level, taking you over the mountain at 400 meters altitude and down to Gullvatnet and Gursli mines at 380 meters above sea level.   Mining of the ore molybdenite lasted only a short but intense period from 1915 to 1919, and traces from this era can be found many places. In addition to the mines, remnants of the crusher and houses are left for visitors to see today. The highlight of the route for most people is to visit the inside of Stoll 3, one of the many mines at Gursli. The guide will bring groups inside to show how mining was done a century ago.     An additional route can be added to the Hattesteinane glacial erratics - two large rocks that had been moved by glaciers and by chance placed on top of each other during deposition on top of the mountain. An impressive sight illustrating the power of the glaciers that covered the area during the last Ice Age.    Tour includes: -Access to an abandoned mine -Professional guide -Hot beverage and snack

Activities in Bjerkreim

Magma Geopark Ørsdalen historic mines

Ørsdalen historic mines

The Ørsdalen mines, situated in Ørsdalen (Bjerkreim), is a spectacular and unique place. The valley Ørsdalen is isolated and the only access is by boat across the Ørsdalen lake or by driving over the mountains. This was a difficult site for mining in itself, but what made it even more challenging was that the mines were placed on top of the 800 meters high mountains and in the mountain side, in addition to the valley floor.    This hike will take you along the old paths used by miners carrying the ore from the mine - more than once it makes you think of the hard labor and dangerous work the miners were exposed to.    Several mines can be visited, one at the valley floor with open access and more on the top of the mountain. This hike takes about 6 hours and includes great views and exciting history. In some parts the hike is challenging and we recommend visitors to wear proper equipment.    Tour includes: -Professional guide -Hot beverage and snack
